I’ve thought for some time about adding a page to this blog, showing you birds that visit my garden.  I put out feeders, grow plants that invite birds in, and do not use toxic chemicals – no weedkillers, fertilizers or bugkillers.  This is the beginning of my ‘list’ and the new page is now on the sidebar so it will be easy to find later.  I plan to add more visitors  on the page – Birds Visiting my Garden – as I take new photos or find older versions.

Some of these images have been published as all occasion greeting cards – with a link just in case you’d like to order.  My ‘published’ birds are also available in fine art prints on paper, canvas and metal.  Enjoy!

I have many other bird photos that I’ve published as all occasion greeting cards.  I plan to add an additional page here to show you the fascinating birds of my Pacific Northwest region.  I especially love the big birds, eagles, herons, osprey, hawks…

So much to do, so little time!!

Steider Studios Annual Studio Sale 2014

My annual studio sale is coming up on April 11, 12 & 13 in the hills above White Salmon Washington.  I’ll open my studio for three fun-filled days along with 40 other artists juried into the Gorge Artists Open Studios.  It’s the only time ALL my work is unpacked and displayed in one setting.  Enjoy a stroll through my garden on your way down to see my photography and art glass in my little cabin.

I just ordered new metal prints and all occasion greeting cards from my nature & landscape photographs.  My kiln has been reloaded with MORE art glass garden art.  Last night I finished cold-working new earrings and bracelets.  I have a feeling I’ll be finishing them between guests as there’s still so much preparation left to do!

You can find maps of the tour at Mt Adams Chamber of Commerce or download a pdf from our website, http://gorgeartists.org  onto your iPad or similar device.

If you’re in ~ or will be in ~ the Pacific Northwest, I’m happy to send you directions, just send me a message.

Until then, I’ll be scouring out my studio & unpacking all my work to show you!

Steider Studios: Jack in the Pulpit

I gasped when I noticed these flowers blooming!  I’ve tried growing Jack in the Pulpit (also called Cobra Lily) for close to ten years and now I have three blooming!

Steider Studios: Another Jack

I’ve had Arisaema candidissimum and Arisaema sikokianum bloom then disappear.  These Jacks have leafed out each year but never bloomed.  I’m not sure which variety they are because I’ve tried so many, but I think they’re Arisaema heterophyllum.

Steider Studios: Jack in the Pulpit Again

Each is blooming in a different part of my garden – my test to see which is the best spot for them before I buy more.

Steider Studios: PouchFlowers

I have yellow Pouch Flowers blooming!  Love these sweet pockets of color.  I still need to find the red variety.

Steider Studios: Golden Yellow Geum

My geum is at the tail end of its blooming cycle.  Another plant with a red variety I want!

Steider Studios: Yellow Tree Peony

My yellow tree peonie has two blooms this year, but the lavender variety hasn’t developed blooms yet.  I think I have it in the wrong place with not enough sun.  I’ve heard they don’t like being moved, so maybe I can limb up surrounding trees for it.

Steider Studios: Red Peony

I love this red peony – blooms are covering the foliage this year.  My pink peonies are about to burst open.

Steider Studios: Sparrow

As I wander my way through the garden I am serenaded by this sweet Sparrow and a plethera of other song birds.  By planting natural habitat for birds I’ve created a safe zone for them and a sanctuary for me.

Steider Studios: Chickadee with Worm

I try to not disturb the chickadee bringing treats for her babes.

Steider Studios: Chickadee flying from house

And I try to capture her in flight to no avail.  So far.

Steider Studios: Rufous Hummer in Flight

Our hummingbirds must be nesting because they’re no longer fighting over the feeders.

Steider Studios: Raven in Trees

Ravens are back in full force, attacking my compost pile with gusto.

Steider Studios: Cowbird

Alas, the cowbirds are also back!

Steider Studios: Blue Butterfly on Pink Flower

Other critters I love to capture are butterflies.  I stopped using toxic poisons (weed and bug killers) in my garden more than a decade ago and love how these flying flowers have increased over the years.

Steider Studios: Moth Approaching Pink Flower

I especially love when I can capture them in flight!  I grow a lot of plants that encourage them to stay in my Columbia River Gorge garden.

Steider Studios: Profile of a Swallowtail on a Wild Lily

Read this link from Organic Gardening for more information about attracting butterflies to your garden.

Steider Studios: Swallowtail Butterfly on a Wild Lily Flower

Swallowtails are probably the largest butterfly I welcome back each year.

Steider Studios: Bee on Rhodie

I am noticing many different types of bees pollinating my flowers, fruits and veggie plants.

Steider Studios: Ladybug

As I pulled weeds and excess plants I gently moved ladybugs to new homes.

Steider Studios: Gas Plant

My Gas Plant is one I look forward to each year.

Steider Studios: Red Double Columbine

As is this Columbine.  I haven’t posted in so long, I fear I’ll bore you with too many photos, so will end here.

If you’d like an alternative to commercial weed killers, try this recipe, it works:  1 gallon apple cider vinegar, 1 cup salt, 1 teaspoon detergent.  Mix and spray on weeds.

Thanks for stopping by!

Columbia Gorge Art Festival in Corbett Oregon

My last show of the season is this weekend in Corbett Oregon at the Corbett Grade School.  I’ll have glass garden art and jewelry; plus botanical, scenic and nature photography to share with you.

A glorious scenic drive takes you to the western part of the Columbia River Gorge.  Take the Corbett exit off I84, come up the hill & turn right on Historic Columbia River Hwy.  The grade school is just down the highway at 35800 E. Historic Columbia River Hwy.  Hours are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A fundraiser for Corbett Education Foundation, this is one of the best spring shows I participate in.  Festive, friendly and fun you won’t find more creativity and wonderful artists anywhere else.  The entire school is filled with amazing art and handmade fine craft with attention to detail.  I always find treasures at this show for gift giving and additions to my personal collection.

Not to mention a free lunch!  Donations accepted for a fantastic grilled cheeseburger with sautéed onions and mushrooms.  I can’t wait & hope to see you there!!  Let me know you follow my blog!

Steider Studios: Buggettes, Warm Colors

This Friday the Yard, Garden & Patio Show opens!  I’ll be in booth 659 near the display gardens.  Stop by, say hello and tell me you follow my blog.

Steider Studios: Kiln-formed Glass Wall Pocket Vase

I just finished new wall pocket vases to display your pretty flowers.  I have lots of new glass butterflies, buggettes and ladybugs for your garden decor … PLUS….

Steider Studios: Monarch Butterfly

I’ll have new note cards made from my photographs AND some canvas wraps and metal prints that are absolutely stunning!  I am loving my new photographic efforts and results.

Steider Studios: Peach Hibiscus

Next on my calendar is a mini-solo show at ‘The Nook’ at Columbia Arts.  It will open March 1st, in addition to work I’m submitting for the ‘Gorge Artists Open Studios Preview’ at Columbia Art Gallery with 29 other artists.

Steider Studios: Textured with Green Dichro, Long

More good news, my jewelry is included in an article, ‘Top Jewelry Trends’ in Glossi Magazine!

April will be a killer month with an event each weekend, beginning with the Glass Craft & Bead Expo in Las Vegas.  My open studio sale is the second weekend, followed by ‘Artists of the Gorge’, a weekend art show at Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River!  The last weekend in April is the largest show of my year, ‘Glass Gallery’ in Portland at the Convention Center.  The Gathering of the Guilds is the largest event of its kind on the West Coast and is always a must see.  If at all possible, plan to spend a couple of days perusing all the fabulous art at this show.  There is so much to see, so many artists and media that you’ll want to take home one of everything!

Steider Studios: Art Glass Butterfly, Yellow, Orange on Black

Don’t forget come say hi if you go to Portland’s Yard Garden & Patio Show and get $2.00 off admission with this coupon:  YGP 2013 admission coupon.

Thanks for stopping by!

Chickadee on my glass birdbath, looks like I’d better fill it.

Skipper Butterfly on Verbena bonariensis.  I love the detail my new camera captures.

Pink Gaura is a favorite in my garden.

Red Breasted Nuthatch in my weeping cherry tree.

Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly drinking from an aster.  I’m learning about butterfly species!

Pink Hydrangea – it’s my only hydrangea blooming at the moment.

Rufous Sided Towhee perched on a sprinkler head as I stalked him.

Bumblebee imbibing in a sunflower.

I love this single rose – surprising since I usually go for the big fluffy varieties.

Looks like it’s time for a Liquid Fence application.  Before my pears are completely harvested by deer.

Checkerspot butterfly(?) drinking from a lavender aster.

My blue Veronica blooms earlier, then comes a paler pink and finally this beautiful ‘red’.

Steller’s Jay kicking fir cones.

Painted Lady Butterfly on Verbena bonariensis looks like a lollypop!

And a sunny Sunflower just makes me happy.

As always, thanks for stopping by!
